The recent focus on sugar and carbohydrates as a cause of 'diabesity' is noble. The hysteria about whole fruit, fanned by 'experts' like Robert Atkins and Gary Taubes, is insane. To say we should limit fruit because it's a carbohydrate sends a mixed and dangerous message. America did not sink into the abyss of diabetes, obesity and disease from overeating fruit—it got there by massive consumption of processed food, most of which is refined and processed sugar.

The birth of fast/junk food coincides with the girth of America, the two rising trends exactly line up over the past few decades. To lump all carbs together sends a terrible message to those in need of dietary help; they desperately need the fiber, vitamins and nutrient-density found in fruit. They don't need the crap carbs found in big gulp sodas, candy, value meals, frankencinnos, and on and on. Micro thinking should be viewed in light of devastating macro facts.

Don't blame the food group, blame the food.
